Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is performed to correct congenital, acquired or trauma-induced deformities in the nose. In some cases, the deformity is corrected only because it causes visual discomfort, while in many people it may be necessary to correct it because it causes problems such as breathing disorders.
Regardless of the reason for which aesthetic surgery will be performed, the primary goal in rhinoplasty is to make the nasal airway function in the best way at the end of the operation. During the operation, one or more of the procedures of reshaping the nose (reconstruction), removing deformities or changing the shape of a part of the nose can be applied.
People who are considering rhinoplasty should definitely check whether the nasal tissues are suitable for aesthetic surgery during the examination to be performed by the surgeon. Since the slightest intervention can have significant results, rhinoplasty operations must be performed by a surgeon who is a specialist in the field.
Rhinoplasty, which can be applied in both men and women, is a complicated operation. Achieving the expected result requires a process between 6 and 12 months. This process varies according to the size of the operation in the nose, the structure of the tissues in the nose or the severity of the problem. After the operation, some of the patients may require minor correction applications to achieve the desired shape.
How is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty surgery is a type of operation mostly performed under general anesthesia. In simple rhinoplasty operations that require only small touches, local anesthesia can also be applied according to the surgeon’s preference. While the operation takes 2 hours on average, a rhinoplasty operation usually takes 1 day, including preoperative preparations and postoperative applications and observation periods.
There are 2 different rhinoplasty techniques that are commonly preferred. In the first of these, open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made between the nostrils and the surgeon’s field of vision is widened through this incision. Generally, open rhinoplasty technique is preferred for people with advanced nasal deformity or who have previously undergone a different rhinoplasty operation. The biggest advantage of the open technique is the wider angle of vision. However, the healing process is longer and problems such as edema and bruising that occur after the operation are larger in size.
In closed rhinoplasty, which is another technique, the incision made is adjusted to remain within the nostrils. The surgeon’s field of vision is less, but the healing time is shorter and there are no stitch marks in the nose after the operation. Closed rhinoplasty technique is generally preferred for correction of smaller deformities.

What is the Recovery Time for Rhinoplasty?
Although the recovery time varies depending on the size of the operation, patients can usually stand up and walk around within 4-6 hours and start eating after 6 hours if there is no nausea and vomiting. In some cases, patients are discharged on the same day, sometimes they are kept under observation for 1 night and discharged the next day.
At the end of the surgery, tampons are usually placed in the nose. These tampons are removed after 1-2 days, and the mold placed on the back of the nose is removed approximately 1 week after surgery. After the surgery, patients can usually return to their work life within 1 week to 10 days if no complications occur. Post-operative swelling and bruising is normal and it decreases over time to a level that can be covered with make-up within 1 week-10 days.
After 1 month after the operation, 75-80% of the edema disappears. The targeted shape and full recovery is achieved one year after the surgery. During this process, it is normal to see edema in the nose area in the morning and disappear in the following hours.
