Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction Surgery)
Some studies say that one in every 3 men has gynecomastia. Gynecomastia, which can also be observed in infancy and old age, occurs most frequently during adolescence. According to a study conducted in our country, the prevalence of gynecomastia in adolescent males is 34.6%. Although gynecomastia is not harmful to health, it causes distress and embarrassment in the person himself. Long-standing gynecomastia cannot regress spontaneously. It requires medical treatment and surgical intervention when necessary.
Gynecomastia Surgery
Surgical intervention is the most effective and definitive method in the treatment of gynecomastia. The type of intervention is decided by the surgeon after examinations. Again, different methods can be used here against different classifications of gynecomastia. To give an example;
- In glandular type gynecomastia, hard breast tissue is predominant and needs to be surgically removed.
- In mixed type gynecomastia, there is an excess of glandular tissue and adipose tissue, surgery and liposuction are used together.
- In Fatty Type gynecomastia, adipose tissue is predominant and can only be treated with liposuction.
In another classification, the size of the breast tissue and excess skin are evaluated. The type of surgical intervention is determined accordingly.

After Gynecomastia Surgery
The process experienced after gynecomastia surgery differs according to the technique of the surgery. If vaser or laser liposuction techniques are preferred in the treatment, the healing process is also very comfortable. After vaser and laser liposuction applications in gynecomastia formation due to fat tissue, the person gets effective results at the end of about 3 weeks and can easily do many activities.
In cases requiring surgical intervention, although the operation is usually performed under general anesthesia, local anesthesia may be preferred in some cases. The person can be discharged on the same day after the operation. Depending on general anesthesia, the person may need to be kept under observation overnight, but this situation is not very common.
It is normal to see edema and swelling in the area after gynecomastia surgery. These formations disappear spontaneously within the first week. There may be mild muscle aches after the operation. It is important to rest for 3 days after gynecomastia surgery and not to move the arms and shoulders too much for the comfort of the person and the healing process. On the 3rd day of the operation, you can take a shower, return to work, and take light walks, provided that it does not take too long.
